Sugden Audio proudly introduces the new Sapphire FBA-800 Pure Class ‘A’ stereo amplifier, which will further strengthen Sugden’s position and reputation among discerning music enthusiasts.

Sugden’s primary goal in developing the FBA-800 is musical performance combined with a practical user interface, pride of ownership, and product durability.

Market trends for new and trendy technologies have not been ignored, and the FBA-800 has been developed to provide the user with the best possible euphonic experience.

Like all Sugden products, they are designed and manufactured by Sugden at their facility in West Yorkshire, England. The use of through-hole components instead of surface mount components, where possible, enhances the product’s lifespan, performance, and reliability.

Sugden has extensive experience with Class ‘A’ amplification and a strong belief in the acoustic benefits of Class ‘A’ operation.

The FBA-800 is a bridged amplifier operating in Pure Class ‘A’ output mode. The power is set at 40 watts per channel, and the device’s transformer has a power rating of 350 VA. The amplifier offers the following input options: balanced input or phono/unbalanced input (both stereo pairs). The output is through a stereo pair of speaker terminals.

Selected optional features include:

Input sensitivity: this can be reduced by -6 dB in one step. This allows the user to adjust the balance/tuning of the audio chain, for example: preamplifier – power amplifier – speakers. The sensitivity is selected with a push button on the front panel.

Balanced or phono/RCA input: can also be switched with a push button on the front panel.

The FBA-800 Power Amplifier is a Class A stereo amplifier operating in Bridged mode with a floating output ground. Each channel consists of two amplifiers acting as voltage amplifiers and driving a bridge power transistor output stage.

Benefits include low noise floor, better power delivery relative to the supply voltage (x2), and a low output impedance and better load tolerance due to the fixed current in Class A mode. The amplifier is designed for modern high-efficiency speakers.

The power amplifier is DC-coupled with a servo-lock for excellent low-frequency detail. For safety purposes, the amplifier features a DC protection circuit. This circuit is statically switched using devices with extremely low impedance. The circuit also soft-switches the amplifier on and off.

Power Supply

The power supply is designed with low impedance and features a custom-made dual-coil transformer with four separate windings. The main buffer capacitors for the output stage are specially designed for professional audio applications and have excellent ripple characteristics and a long lifespan. The four power transistors per channel in the output stage are multi-emitter devices with an output power of 26 amperes per device.

The FBA-800 operates fully in balanced mode, from the device’s input to output. This is achieved by using the two amplifiers per channel in balanced mode. For those who want to experience all the emotions of music, this amplifier is fully set in Class A.
