Trafomatic HEAD ONE Headphone amp

The Trafomatic HEAD ONE is designed around the super-linear Russian 6S45P triode tube and delivers up to 2 x 300 mW.

To be able to optimally adjust the amplifier to the impedance of the connected headphones, the output transformer has multiple secondary windings and taps, which can be selected with a rotary switch on the front panel. Unlike typical OTL solutions, this ensures perfect impedance matching for different types of headphones.

As with all our amplifiers, ensuring “lossless sound quality” on all outputs was an important design goal for this amplifier.

In line with the design principles and philosophy of the entire Experience series, a high-quality power supply was implemented with utmost care. This includes a toroidal transformer with low induction, a tube rectifier, dual L-C filtering for the anode voltage, and top-quality dual C-core output transformers.

The headphone impedance connection values are 30, 100, and 300 ohms, allowing for easy driving of different dynamic headphone models.

To enhance tube-rolling enjoyment, Trafomatic has chosen a low-noise tube/soft start rectifier design for the Experience Head One – an indirectly heated EZ80 or EZ81. This is in contrast to many competing devices in this price range which use semiconductors for rectification with a similar concept. Other quality components include Rubicon electrolytic capacitors, an Alps potentiometer, metal film resistors, and more.

The “small” Trafomatic Head Amp has two RCA inputs on the back panel. These inputs can be selected with a small toggle switch below the connections.

Additionally, the Experience Head One offers a fun and convenient option: the switch for setting the connection impedance has an “alternative” position labeled as “Lineout”.

This means that the headphone amplifier can also be used as a tube preamplifier.
